Durga Saptashati Pooja

Durga Saptashati Puja Durga Saptashati Paath is a very sacred and powerful sadhana to get the blessings of Maa Durga. It is an important part of the Markandeya Purana, which contains 700 verses (Saptashati) of Devi Mahatmya. It is also known as Chandi Paath.

Durga Saptashati worships the three main forms of Goddess Durga – Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati. This puja is especially performed during Navratri or any other auspicious occasion.

Importance of Durga Saptashati Puja – This puja is done to get the blessings of the Goddess and bring happiness, prosperity and peace in life.

Destroyer of Obstacles – Goddess Durga removes all kinds of obstacles and troubles.

Destroys negative energy.Reciting Durga Saptashati purifies the environment and eliminates negative energies.

Wish Fulfilment —This puja is performed for the fulfillment of special desires and to gain spiritual strength.

Spiritual advancement — Remembering the qualities of the Goddess provides a person with spiritual peace and spiritual advancement

Method of Durga Saptshati Puja — 

  • Idol or picture of the Goddess, Chowki, coconut, barley, sandalwood, incense, lamp,
  • Red rice, kumkum and turmeric
  • Flowers (especially red flowers)
  • Incense and lamp
  • Naivedya (sweets, fruits etc.)
  • Kalash, holy Ganga water
  • To prepare for the Puja, take a bath in the morning and wear clean clothes. Clean the place of worship.

Kalash Sthapana –Install the Kalash at the place of worship.

  • Invocation of the Goddess Meditate on Goddess Durga and decorate her idol or picture with clothes, flowers, and kumkum.
  • Lighting the lamp – Light the lamp and offer incense.
  • Meditation of the Goddess: Meditate on the Goddess with the mantra “Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundaye Vicche”.
  • Argala Stotra: Recite Argala Stotra, Keelak and Kavach before the recitation.
  • 13 chapters of Durga Saptashati have to be recited.
  • First Character (Madhu-Kaitabh Vadh)
  • Mahalakshmi Charitra (Mahishasura Mardini)
  • Mahasaraswati Charitra (Shumbha-Nishumbha Vadh)
  • Devi Stuti and Prayer: After the recitation, praise the Goddess.
  • Havan (if possible)
  • After the recitation, Havan can be performed. Chant Durga Mantra with “Swaha” in the Havan.
  • After the recitation and Havan, perform Aarti of the Goddess.
  • And then distribute the Prasadam among all the devotees.

special precautions

Do the recitation with full devotion and faith. Avoid mistakes in reciting Saptashati. If you are not comfortable in Sanskrit, get it done by a learned Brahmin.

Maintain purity and concentration during the recitation. Worshiping Durga Saptashati gives a person amazing power, prosperity and the grace of the Goddess. It removes difficulties from life and brings positivity. It is especially fruitful if done during Navratri or any auspicious day.
